Assuming you are going to use DOS MAME and an Arcade Monitor:
Stick w/ an ATI 8mb card. Anything more is just overkill, video is not the bottleneck it's cpu.

Also I have the entire collection of GoodTools recognized roms, +/- 100 for NES, SNES, GEN, SMS, GB, NeoPockot & GG, some MP3's and AVI's and the complete mame set and it only takes 10GB. 40GB will work but you may be better off w/ something cheaper unless that's what you already have.

You won't need more than 128MB of RAM w/ the current state of mame.

Skimp on some of this stuff and save the money for the biggest baddest CPU you can find.
Good Luck.

: Hey, I was wondering what video card would be best to use for a stand alone mame system. I'm starting to build the box that will serve as my cabinet brain...

: I have a couple video cards laying around here like an original Voodoo Banshee and a Voodoo 3500TV AGP (i sort of use this one).

: I will buy a new one if I have to but if anyone here knows of a reason (or reasons) that I shouldn't.. PLEASE LET ME KNOW =D

: Also... since we're talking about systems (at least I am). Here are the specs for my mame system.

: p3 600
: 256mb ram
: 40 gig hdd
: video card = ?
: sound blaster AWE (old school =D)
: and some other stuff that doesn't contribute to the gameplay (100mbit ethernet for stuff like adding new roms and managing the box, etc).

: Is this too much? Too little? I would like to play games like stun runner if possible but not if its gonna cost me an extra 2-300 bucks for a hardcore vid card or a better cpu..

: WOW I WROTE A LOT! Get back to me fellas!
